The
top image shows a line of ions held stably in the Linear Trap,
organizing themselves into a linear Coulomb crystal. When the AC
fields were turned up higher, two of the ions went into extended
orbits, as shown in the lower image. The inset image shows one
such extended orbit, here looking down the axis of the Linear Trap.
